A Gunshot-Wound Survivor’s Fears for Gabrielle Giffords

Written by Braiden on April 8, 2011

A possible gang-related shooting left Mailo Chavez unable to work even three years after it occurred.

In an article taken from The Bellingham Herald he recounts his harrowing road to “recovery” and wonders how Gabrielle Giffords will fare in the unpredictable world of brain injuries.

He says he often remembers the evening of his accident, and wonders if things would have changed if he’d walked out the door even five minutes later?

“All that hits you in the middle of the night,” he said. “Why was I there? Should I have waited five more minutes before I went out that door?”

Have five minutes ever changed the course of your life?

Memory of Mom: The 30th Anniversary Party

Written by Wendy Greshel on April 8, 2011

I have so many awesome memories of my Mommy. But I will never forget when I gave her and my Dad a surprise 30th anniversary party at the Searoom.

I decorated the lounge area with all of their wedding items she had treasured throughout the years. Even her wedding dress!

When we arrived, she walked in the back door, and in shock, she leaned next to me and said, “I can’t believe someone is having a party, and I was not invited!”

All of her friends and family were there. Then BLAM she looked around and knew it was for her!

I will never forget the look in her eyes when she hugged and kissed me. I even convinced her to put on her wedding dress and she and my dad danced together.

Almost 29 years later, the day before God took her away from me, we talked about so many things. And she told me that was the best party she had ever been to.

She thanked me again, with tears in her eyes.

My mom was and still is a courageous woman I draw my strength and convictions from. She battled lung cancer for almost 14 years, and never gave up.

I never knew how much she endured her illness, as she did not want me to worry about her.

I love you, MOMMY! 3/31/37 – 3/23/06

Adieu to Adored Pets

Written by Kelly Meister on April 7, 2011

I’ve had to euthanize several beloved pets through the years.

The final moments in the vet’s office gave me the opportunity to say my goodbyes to the wonderful characters I’d shared my life with.

I’ve learned from those experiences, though, that whether it’s five minutes, five hours, or five days, there will never be a good time to say goodbye, nor will there be sufficient time to say all the things you’d like to say.

Whether you’re saying goodbye at the end of life, or by some miracle get a chance to connect with someone who’s already departed, the problem is the same: when they’re gone, they’re gone, and there’s no way to avoid the devastation that follows.

In those last minutes in the veterinarian’s office, I tell all my pets the same thing: that they’re loved, that they’ll be missed, that they were the best pet ever. I cry. And I remember the words that Cleveland Amory wrote in “The Best Cat Ever:” “It’s not just that Polar Bear was not there; it was the awful, overpowering weight of knowing that he’d never, ever be there again.”

Love Lost to the Vietnam War

Written by Deborah Chamberlain on April 1, 2011

I lost my first boyfriend because of the Vietnam War.

He committed suicide rather than go to Canada, but that was a complete shock.

If I had five more minutes, I would have been either more insistent on learning his true plans, or I would have held him, told him for only the second time that I loved him, and said goodbye, something we did not do at the time.

It haunts me still, even after 40-plus years.
